Abstract

Background: The medications known as sulfa drugs have been commonly associated with cutaneous drug reactions, which can be associated with complications, sequelae, and even death.

Case report: This is a case report that was assessed at Hospital San Juan de Dios of the Caja Costarricense del Seguro Social, of a patient with ulcerative colitis, that after 20 days of treatment with sulfasalazine she presents with a severe cutaneous drug reaction, probably Stevens Johnson Syndrome. A lymphocyte transformation test was performed afterward, with positive results associating the sulfa drug as the causing agent.

Conclusions: With the lymphocyte transformation test it was verified that sulfasalazine was involved in the severe drug reaction presented by the patient, and thus avoid its use.
