Abstract

Background: Immunization is a human right, a health action that reduces infant mortality and eradicates diseases. In Latin America, coverage has decreased in this decade.

Objectives: To determine the level of knowledge and acceptance that mothers of children under 5 have about vaccination at UMF 1, Orizaba, Ver.

Methodology: Cross-sectional observational descriptive analytical study. Non-probabilistic sample, 138 mothers. Two questionnaires were applied, proposed by PAHO, which qualifies parents' attitudes about vaccines. Absolute frequencies and percentages were estimated, and association was determined with Pearson's Chi square.

Results: Of 138 women from 18 to 48 years old. The level of knowledge was high (70.3%) and is associated with age and education (p=0.00) and occupation (p=0.03). Higher frequencies were: housewife (47.1%) professional (3.5%) married (60.2%) and Catholic (81.2%)

Discussion: A study by the Academy of Pediatrics concludes that the benefits of vaccines outweigh their risks, we found that 99.3% of mothers trust vaccines despite their risks.

Conclusion: Our null hypothesis is confirmed, obtaining 70.3% have a high knowledge about vaccination and it is associated with the age, schooling and occupation of the mothers.
