Abstract

Background: Asthma is a chronic disease of high impact in public health and in quality of life of patients. In Latin America, there are scarce epidemiological studies of asthma.
Objective: To describe the prevalence of asthma and clinical-demographic characteristics in adult patients of a population of a private health system in the City of Buenos Aires.
Methods: Cross-section study of adult affiliated to a medical program of the private health system sector in Buenos Aires. Time elapse comprehends the period from 1st of January of 2017 to 1st of January of 2018. All patients included in the study had a medical diagnostic of asthma.
Results: Asthma prevalence in adult patients of a certain prepaid private health system in the City of Buenos Aires was 6 % (N = 66, IC95 % = 5-7). Severe asthma prevalence among the same group was 5 % (N = 3 IC95 % = 1-13). Majority of patients presented with intermittent and mild asthma.
Conclusion: This study provides new epidemiological data of asthma in the region.
