Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with smoking during the period of confinement due to COVID-19.

Methods: Through an analytical and cross-sectional study, data from 2, 372 participants were analyzed. The information was collected through a self-administered questionnaire built using the Google Forms tool. The questionnaire was distributed and applied via email and the private messaging platform WhatsApp. The relationship between the independent variables and the outcome was determined by multivariate logistic regression analysis.

Results: A total of 2,372 questionnaires were analyzed, 69.3 % were women and the average age was 20.11±2.01 years. The prevalence of asthma was 12.2 % and active smoking was 13.3 %. Results show that asthmatic patients smoke more (14.2 vs. 13.2 %) compared to non-asthmatic ones. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that, consider that COVID-19 does not exist and does not comply with COVID-19 confinement related to smoking in asthmatic patients during the implementation of the contingency plan for COVID-19.

Conclusions: During confinement at home for COVID-19, the prevalence of smoking is higher in asthmatic patients compared to non-asthmatic patients. The factors that favor smoking in asthmatic patients during the application of the contingency plan for COVID-19 are present in the family environment
