Abstract

Provocation tests are a useful and effective method, which should have expanded and standardized use. Its importance is applied to confirm the diagnosis of food allergy, allowing greater safety for the patient, avoiding accidental exposures, and validating efforts; in patients with negative results, it improves their quality of life and reduces nutritional risks. The controlled double-blind oral challenge test involves offering the patient suspected foods, usually in increasing doses, with medical supervision to evaluate her allergic condition. It is currently considered the best method for diagnosing food allergies, because positive serum specific IgE and skin test results can only indicate sensitization and not necessarily allergy.
